What Are Immune Supportive Therapies & Who Are They For?

immune supportive therapiesIf you are like many people you live a very busy and full life and that can make it difficult to keep up with all of the health terminology and resources available to you and your family.  One health treatment – immune supportive therapies – is a treatment that many people are not yet familiar with but they should be!  Immune-supportive therapy is a naturopathic treatment for cancer.  During cancer treatment, a patient’s immune system becomes significantly compromised and so it is important to support it in as many ways as possible.  Unfortunately, cancer treatment and the disease itself can take a toll on the body but there are treatment options that are not harmful to the body, known as immune supportive therapies.
immune supportive therapiesNaturopathic immune supportive therapies (also known as IVC) are an ideal option for many patients to be used in conjunction with traditional cancer treatments.  A research study published in the Journal of Translational Medicine had positive results using IVC in the treatment of patients with cancer and reduction of inflammation, “An inflammatory component is present in the microenvironment of most neoplastic tissues. Inflammation and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) are associated with poor prognosis and decreased survival in many types of cancer. Vitamin C has been suggested as having both a preventative and therapeutic role in a number of pathologies when administered at much higher-than-recommended dietary allowance levels…45 patients with prostate cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, pancreatic cancer, lung cancer, thyroid cancer, skin cancer, and B-cell lymphoma were treated at the Riordan Clinic by high doses of vitamin C (7.5 g -50 g) after standard treatments by conventional methods…The high dose intravenous ascorbic acid therapy affects C-reactive protein levels and pro-inflammation cytokines in cancer patients. In our study, we found that modulation of inflammation by IVC correlated with decreases in tumor marker levels…Our data support the hypothesis that high dose intravenous ascorbate treatments may reduce inflammation in cancer patients.”
If you are a patient or have a friend or loved one that is being treated for cancer, it is important to support your holistic health throughout the entirety of treatment, and beyond.  This can be accomplished in many ways but it is ideal to add a naturopathic physician to your cancer treatment team to help educate and inform you of naturopathic treatment options as well as immune supportive therapies (IVC) that may be beneficial for your health, treatment, and outcome.
