Adrenal Fatigue Symptoms and How to Treat It Naturally

It seems today that the majority of people are living very stressful and exhausting lifestyles.  So, it should come as no surprise that so many people are experiencing the negative effects of stress and exhaustion on their overall health, including adrenal fatigue. Reader’s Digest elaborates on how pervasive adrenal fatigue just ay be and explains how it is diagnosed, “Dr. Teitelbaum believes adrenal fatigue is becoming an epidemic. “Estimates are that it affects 16 to 67 percent of the population at different levels of severity,” he says. Although anyone at any age may suffer, people who have a tremendous amount of stress in their lives for personal or professional reasons are most susceptible…Some doctors will draw blood to check levels of the stress hormone cortisol, although adrenal fatigue doctors aren’t fond of this test since it only measures the cortisol in your blood at the moment of the test—and levels vary widely throughout the day. An Adrenal Stress Index Test is more effective, according to Dr. Teitelbaum, because it tests a person’s saliva four times over the course of one day and will show the accurate function of the adrenal glands. However, the best indication of trouble is the patient’s symptoms.  “The easiest way to tell is if you get irritable when hungry,” Dr. Teitelbaum says.”

Common symptoms of adrenal fatigue include fatigue, mental fogginess, stress, salt cravings, allergies, frequent infections, low libido, problems with circulation, muscle weakness, mild depression, and more.  Adrenal fatigue is often brought on by excessive stress (could be mental, emotional, physical, or environmental stress) or significant nutritional deficiencies.  While ever person may experience one or all of these symptoms from time to time, when a person experiences a group of these symptoms on a consistent or daily basis, it may be a sign that they have adrenal fatigue.  And, while adrenal fatigue may be difficult to diagnose for some practitioners, an experienced naturopathic physician can help determine whether or not you have adrenal fatigue so that you can begin to treat it naturally and experience symptom relief.

The good news about treating adrenal fatigue is that there are many simple, natural treatments that can be used.  The first place to start is with your diet.  It is important to eat a healthy diet that is rich in healthy fats, natural salt, lean protein, foods rich in Vitamin C, and and plenty of vegetables.  Additionally, it is ideal to limit or eliminate caffeine, sugar, processed foods and processed meats.  Further, it is important to get plenty of rest and to avoid overtraining if participating in athletic competition.  In addition to dietary changes, your naturopathic physician can recommend nutritional and herbal supplements to help support your adrenal health that include things like licorice root, fish oil, magnesium, Vitamin D, Vitamin C, selenium,  B vitamins, Ashwagandha, adaptogenic herbs, and more.  With treatment and time, your naturopathic physician can help you heal from adrenal fatigue.
